More Fees for DUI on the Way!
The penalties and fees associated with a DUI conviction can be devastating. Now a Tennessee Sheriff is looking to add the cost of a DUI blood test to an offender’s bill. According to the proposal, a BAC of .08% or higher will incur a fee of $100.00, which is the estimated cost for a doctor to draw blood at the jailhouse instead of a hospital. A BAC of .07% will not be charged the fee. (more…)

Labor Day Weekend is typically a time when we see a high number of DUI arrests. That goes for high profile celebrities too. Fresh on the heels of the recent DUI arrest of Matt Hardy, former Olympic champion and current pro wrestler Kurt Angle was arrested for DUI early Sunday morning in Virginia. According to police, another motorist called to report that Angle’s car was swerving on the highway. Police officers did not release information about Angle’s blood-alcohol level. (more…)
Pro wrestler Matt Hardy charged with DWI after crash in North Carolina

WWE high flying sensation Matt Hardy was arrested and charged with driving while impaired in North Carolina after his car ran into a tree. The arresting officer said that Hardy had not been drinking, but appeared to be under the influence of “some type of impairing substance.” DWI in North Carolina is similar to being charged with DUI in Colorado. NFL Receiver Hines Ward Suspected of DUI

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward was arrested early Saturday morning on suspicion of driving under the influence in DeKalb County, Georgia. According to the DeKalb County sheriff’s office, the former Super Bowl MVP and current “Dancing with the Stars” champ was released on bond and couldn’t release any further information about Ward’s arrest after handling the case over to the courts. A top Denver DUI lawyer points out that in Georgia, the legal BAC is .08%.

Former MLB Star Mark Grace Arrested For DUI

This hasn’t been a very good 2011 season for sports figures when it comes to drunk driving. Former Major Leaguer and current announcer for the Arizona Diamondbacks Mark Grace was arrested in Scottsdale, AZ, on Memorial Day on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. According to the police report, Grace admitted to having “a few drinks” and did not have his wallet or license on him when he was stopped.

Denver sobriety courts hopes to reduce repeat DUI offenders

A new Denver-based DUI court that will focus on reducing repeat DUI offenders is now open for business. Taking key features from other DUI courts across the U.S., the new Denver DUI court will allow some repeat drunk drivers to opt into an 18- to 24-month court program that focuses on addiction treatment, frequent interactions with a judge, and regular blood-alcohol monitoring instead of a six month jail sentence. Wolverine Wide Receiver Arrested for DUI

University of Michigan Wide Receiver Darryl Stonum was suspended from the team Saturday after it was revealed that he was arrested early Friday morning for suspicion of operating under the influence, similar to DUI in Colorado. Rick Springfield Arrested for DUI

Best known for the hit song “Jessie’s Girl” and his role as Dr. Noah Drake on the daytime soap opera General Hospital, 80’s pop star and actor Rick Springfield was arrested and charged with DUI late Sunday night. According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Springfield was pulled over for a traffic violation and officers detected the odor of alcohol. Police say Springfield failed a field sobriety test and had a BAC of .10, .02 higher than the legal limit in California.

Man Arrested for Drunk Driving Twice in One Night

According to the New York State Troopers, a Mount Vernon man was stopped for drunk driving by the same State Troopers twice in one day. Police say the 46 year old driver was arrested for DWI (similar to DUI in Colorado) with a BAC of .14%, which is higher than the legal limit. The man was released to a sober passenger who was to drive him home. The same State Troopers stopped the man later in the day and say he had a BAC of .11%, which is still higher than the legal limit. One of Denver’s best DUI attorneys points out that the man will have to face each charge separately in court.

MLB Star’s DUI More Serious Than Previously Thought

New evidence produced by the state attorney about the recent high profile DUI arrest of Miguel Cabrera indicates that the Detroit Tigers All Star came close to committing even more serious offenses. According to reports, Cabrera’s reckless driving forced two vehicles off the road, including a tractor trailer, that could have caused a serious fatal accident in either event. (more…)

The recent DUI conviction of Baltimore Ravens offensive line coach Andy Moeller spotlights a continued perception of recklessness in the sports community. Last month, Notre Dame Wide Receiver Michael Floyd was arrested for suspicion of DUI. Detroit Tiger All Star Miguel Cabrera will have to wait a while longer to see if his driver’s license will be reinstated. The administrative hearing was postponed to allow one of the arresting deputies to testify, but no new hearing date has been scheduled. (more…)

Put this is the official “What Not To Do In Court” section. A New York man is being held in jail after showing up drunk for his felony DWI hearing. To make matters worse, he made no attempt to conceal his intoxication when he allegedly arrived holding an open can of Busch beer, with four more in his bag, according to law enforcement. (more…)
Yet Another MLB Player Arrested for DUI

An experienced Denver DUI lawyer was surprised to see yet another Major League Baseball player arrested for suspicion of DUI recently. This time it’s Oakland Athletics veteran Coco Crisp. Crisp was arrested early Wednesday in Scottsdale, where the A’s hold their spring training, after police observed Crisp “driving erratically.” According to the police report, Crisp had a BAC of .13, higher than allowed by law. The Detroit Tigers and the Cleveland Indians have a long standing divisional rivalry that added a new wrinkle. A recent MLB.com article revealed that Indians veteran right fielder Austin Kearns was arrested and charged with DUI in Kentucky just before heading to Arizona for spring training with his team. Not to be outdone, the all-star first baseman for the Detroit Tigers, Miguel Cabrera, was also arrested and charged with DUI just before the beginning of Tiger spring training in Florida. (more…)
Colorado considers pot DUI law

Colorado lawmakers are considering new rules affecting marijuana users who may be driving under the influence. The newly proposed rules would consider it a DUI related offense if drivers exceed the blood-content threshold for marijuana. Drivers who test positive for 5 nanograms or more of THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, would be considered too impaired to drive. (more…)
