Steve Croke, Steamboat Springs, CO resident and CEO of Fuzz Alert, built an app that allows users to pinpoint law enforcement tools such as red light/speeding cameras, speed traps, and sobriety checkpoints. However, the so called “DUI app” is causing some controversy. In fact the app was specifically mentioned by name last week at a senate hearing, where several senators requested that smartphone manufacturers Google, Blackberry, and Apple stop selling apps that allow drivers to checkpoints, or at least to disable that function.
A top Denver DUI attorney notes that in many cases, these apps are simply reporting information that is publically distributed by law enforcement agencies anyway. Croke says he is considering removing the DUI checkpoint feature of his app claiming that he only wanted to help “people drive safer.”
